Now this is the summer flick I have been long time waiting for. And this si the movie that I have been waiting for, for quite some time now too. And sad to say, I do not agree with what some of the critics say about the film. I actually think that this film is a masterpiece. Singer has succeeded in making this film as great as it could be. There are still rooms for improvements, i know but I gotta say that I loved every inch of this movie.
I am a big big fan (more so a follower) of Superman. I've seen the four films, seen the adventures of Lois and Clark (and I have its dvd), seen Smallville (Also have the dvds) and collected all that it is to collect. but that being said I did not let them affect what I saw in the film. (well I'm a bit biased, well, who isn't?)
(Spoiler Alert)
the opening big airplane scene was executed well and I must say that the visuals were jaw dropping. The visuals of this film was grand. The cinematography too also helped. It made Metropolis vibrant and alive. I have a bit of problem with the pacing though. It was a bit off, but ok nonetheless. If it was paced better it could have been better.
The actors were great. routh was brooding with charisma and the likeness of Christopher Reeve. But Routh's Kent was more likeable than of Reeve's because Routh was less of a geek just like in the comic books. Bosworth probably is the most beautiful Lane since Hatcher in the tv series. She lacked the quirkiness of the original Lois Lane probably because she has a broodling to boot. Kevin Spacey seems to be having fun with his role as lex luthor and he was great in it. he's very sinister, but also funny. My favorite in the cast was Parker Posey. I must say she bageed the best in show award and looks like she is bound to get nominated in RacsO Awards. I wish they had used more of Eva Marie Saint. She was a graceful cameo here.
The thing that separates Superman Returns from other comic book adaptations and other Superman films is the fact that they actually made Superman less alien-y and more human. A Human that feels and gets hurt. A man with a steel body but has heart and soul that of a human being.
Though many will disagree with me if I say that this is the best superhero flick ever (sorry Spider-Man 2 you're a close second) but i think and based on my personal feelings for the film, this is the ebst superhero flick to date. All hail the return of Superman. (A)
